A real-world walking boot review

Telegraph Recommended recently carried out an in-depth review of some of the best walking boots for men and women, tested on real UK terrain in real walking conditions. Their reviewers walked muddy hillsides, chalk tracks, rocky trails and mixed countryside routes to assess how each pair performed in everyday use. Two Meindl boots were included in the line-up: the Meindl Respond Lady Mid II GTX, which was awarded Best Buy for women, and the Meindl Baltimore GTX, highlighted as the Best Men’s Walking Boot for Country Strolls.

How the boots were tested out on the trail

Rather than relying on lab data, the Telegraph reviewers wore each pair across varied terrain to see how they handled real-world conditions. Boots were assessed for comfort, support, grip, durability, weight, weather protection and breathability, with extra credit for secure lacing systems and cushioning that performs well over longer distances. Waterproofing was tested in rain, puddles and wet grass, while traction was put to the test on slippery slopes and uneven ground.

Best Buy women’s walking boot

The Meindl Respond Lady Mid II GTX was selected as the Best Buy women’s walking boot thanks to its secure ankle support, lightweight feel and impressive grip on steep and slippery ground. Reviewer Sarah Madden praised how the boots held her ankles securely without rubbing, even on uneven terrain, and noted how well they suited her wider feet while still feeling supportive.

The Contagrip sole provided excellent traction on icy chalk tracks where other boots had previously struggled, and the breathable Air-Active footbed helped regulate temperature on longer outings. With the added benefit of being re-solable, the Respond Lady Mid II GTX was highlighted as a boot designed for comfort, confidence and long-term use.

Best men’s walking boot for country strolls

The Meindl Baltimore GTX was recognised as the best men’s walking boot for relaxed countryside walking and everyday outdoor wear. The review highlighted its cushioned fit and adjustable lacing, which allows wearers to tailor support around the ankle and foot. On softer ground and muddy Peak District paths, the Baltimore GTX provided steady, reassuring footing and excellent waterproofing, particularly when walking through long wet grass. With classic leather uppers, shock-absorbing soles and the refined finish Meindl boots are known for, the Baltimore GTX was described as a comfortable, well-balanced choice for hikes and country walks.

Why features like grip, fit and waterproofing matter

Throughout the full review, the Telegraph Recommends reviewers emphasised the importance of choosing walking boots that match the terrain and style of walking you enjoy most. From ankle support and cushioning to tread depth and weather protection, the testing reinforced that the right pair of boots can make a big difference to comfort and confidence outdoors. We’re pleased to say both Meindl models stood out for their secure fit, reliable waterproofing and thoughtful design details.
